Mangatoro, Dannevirke

Captain George Douglas Hamilton of the 11th Hussars and a veteran of the Maori Wars, originally leased 30,000 acres from the Maori owners, but they kept a strict eye on him, not allowing he and his partner John Wilkinson to touch the bush or take his wool clip down the Manawatu River. The 8 stand woolshed with a shingles roof was built approximately in the 1870’s but has been out of use for many years. 5000 acres were eventually freeholded but in 1884 the block was taken over by the Bank of New Zealand. In 1902 the remaining 20,000 acres of leasehold were bought by the Government and cut into 26 sections for ballot under the Lands Settlement Act. In 1908 the Government sold the homestead block to William Knight, despite lengthy court proceedings by Hamilton, who died a broken man in 1911. Knight’s son A.B. Knight, who ran the block in conjunction with Tiratu, where he had a sawmill, cut the property up after the 1st World War. The homestead block of 475 acres went to Donald Grant, who established the famous Mangatoro Angus Stud there. His daughter, Maisie Grant took over the stud in 1965 and maintained the high profile. The stud has since been disbanded. The 360 acre farm is now run by Ian Henderson.
